Sports and cultural centre with new public space

The proposal brings a sports and cultural centre that will revitalise the inner periphery of České Budějovice and strengthen the urban fabric. The emphasis is on a high-quality public space with multifunctional use for everyday life and special events. A set of buildings with an active ground floor forms a new town square as the natural centre of the locality. Its dominant feature is a multi-purpose hall for 5,000 spectators for sports, culture and social events.

Urban concept
The design is based on the zoning study Levý břeh. The main element is a new square connecting to the axis of the exhibition center, serving as an entrance and orientation area. The main feature of the area is a sports hall with a clearly defined corner and a walkable roof, which expands the public space and offers views of the city.
Another striking object is the entrance gate to the exhibition center - a timber structure that forms the end of the active parterre along Na Dlouhé louce and Husovy třídy streets. The administrative buildings grade towards the gate and emphasize the entrance area. The parking house connects to the planned development and its groundfloor houses the “Park and play” sports zone. In the western part, a hotel and a residential building are located, which complete the overall mass composition. The hotel offers a view from the upper floor towards the square and the exhibition center.

CONCEPT

Site
The site for the new arena is located close to the centre of České Budějovice between busy roads...
Not a solitaire building
...where the arena should not be a solitary object creating undefined and unused spaces...
Arena with a new public space
...it should rather create a new square and public space which, together with the active groundfloor, will define a new local centre for České Budějovice.

Urban fabric
The urban design goal is to create a set of buildings that fits into the urban fabric of the city.

Main axis
The new square builds on the existing axis and nodes of the adjacent outdoor exhibition area, creating a new entrance square and gathering space before entering the exhibition grounds.

An active street corner The building is not a solitary mass. Thanks to its plinth it creates an urban street corner with an active parterre, also in the daily life.

The new public space allows access to the hall from all directions and at different levels, as well as offering views of the city.

New square
The orientation of the hall helps to define the new large square in ČB. The main entrances to the sports hall and the gate to the fair faces the square.
Outdoor tribune
The base of the hall slopes down to create amfi seating and an extension of the square. It provides more space for people to gather, relax, move around and view the surrounding area.
Parterre
Groundfloors are designed to create an active and human scale facade along the streetscapes.
Views
The elevated landscape allows views of the city and visual connection with the square.

Arena

We propose a functional and easy accessible sports hall that defines an important crossroad in the city and at the same time creates a new public space overlooking the square and the surrounding area. The hall seats 5,000 people and creates a flexible capacity for versatile uses from small sporting events to concerts and international events. It provides facilities for professional teams (Jihostroj) as well as school training regimes and other cultural events. Economic sustainability is ensured by the flexibility of the hall and its quick reconfigurability, as well as the possibility of renting out spaces - the main hall or the Warm-up zone with facilities.

The building has three main parts - the playing area with stands and skyboxes, the plinth with warm up zone and supporting functions, and the landscape with the new public space.

INTERIOR

Multifunctional space for 5,000 visitors, not only for league matches of the Jihostroj České Budějovice volleyball team but also for congresses and exhibitions.

Arena The interior space of the arena is designed to be flexible. The stands can be divided into two sections which allows the upper stands to be visually closed off in case of smaller attendance, creating a more compact environment. The total capacity of the arena is 5,000 spectators.

Park & Play

The parking garage is located next to the arena and provides ramped parking for cars as well as parking for buses, TV-cars and trucks supplying the hall with direct access to the playing field. The parking places reserved for trucks etc. used during sport or other events will not be occupied continuously and therefore we propose covered facilities and occasional pitches for streetball tournaments and other sports - "Park and play". There is also space on the ground floor for retail and services.

GATE TO ČB EXHIBITION PARK

The gate serves as the "showcase" of the ČB exhibition centre, which draws attention to new and ongoing exhibitions and events afar. It allows controlled entry and transfers the visitor to the green area of the exhibition centre. The wooden structure of the gate also acts as a hanging medium for the installation of media and advertising elements.
